The popularity of GPS Sat Nav systems has rocketed over the last few months as the technology has become more accessible and the products more user-friendly.

Unfortunately, thefts of these GPS sat nav systems has also increased - people are increasingly at risk!

Each week, the newspapers and internet are dominated with stories of sat nav thefts from vehicles, police issuing statements warning of the hazards of leaving your system in your vehicle and predictions of what the "most at risk" items are. Our newsfeed on the home page just searches the internet for these stories as proof that these thefts do occur! (Not to mention the occasional system being lost or damaged through no fault of the owner!).

What follows is a story of what happened to the founder of satnavinsurance.com and why we offer insurance to protect and safeguard YOUR GPS sat nav system...

"My wife works in Mobile Phone Corporate Sales and we purchased a Sat Nav system for her to ensure that she got to her appointments in adequate time without all the stress of using an atlas or printing out directions from the internet. Things were going great until late one evening she parked the car on the drive and came into the house thoroughly exhausted from work. As we settled down for the evening and went to bed, we forgot that the Sat Nav system was left in the car.

The next morning, we woke up to the sound of her car alarm, a broken window and a crowbar dent on her car. The Sat Nav had been stolen.

Of course she was upset, and I was angry that one of our possessions had been taken, but we called her car insurance company to try and reclaim our damages. It was at this point, we were told we'd have to pay a £50 excess and the maximum we could claim for the Sat Nav was £250! What a joke! The thing cost us £549! At first I thought it was just something on her car insurance policy, but after I checked my own and consulted with friends it turns out that we would all have been short-changed by our car insurers if something similar would have happened to us.

So, rather than risk being out of pocket in the future, and to give myself and my wife peace of mind, I vowed to find a policy that would cover the full value of a Sat Nav system (without escalating the hefty car insurance premium!).
